Service Description

Are you a Lived Experience Practitioner (LXP)? (Mad) Academic? Student? Clinician? Service User? Carer? Come and join us - Mad Studies is for everyone :-) **Apologies to anyone who booked earlier and had the wrong details, these were for next month** It's always really exciting when someone within the group gets their own work published, and adds to the body of 'academic' literature that is out there. Too often our own work is within so called 'grey literature', which often isn't recognised by academics. We spoke about this last month, and this month, Joy's own submission to Disability & Society will talk about the barriers to getting published, with reviewers often rejecting manuscripts or giving harsh critiques to Mad Academics. Academia itself can be brutal to anyone, but for people who experience mental health illness or trauma it can be particularly distressing. Is there any way around this? Joy has very bravely used auto ethnography as a case study, laying bare her own experiences. Come along and join the discussion - there are many academics who will share this pain, and it is something that will be a fascinating learning for what goes on behind the scenes in academia and why the way we are thought about, medicated and treated is the way it is - people can only learn from the knowledge that is out there. “Survivor research – navigating a publishing barrier: a case study" - authored by Dr. Joy Rooney, who has been with us since the beginning of Mad Studies starting way back in 2018/19..
